Word – Nativity

A poem by Jim Deeds

[New City Magazine – December 2021, page 23]

And so the hour came,
Amidst the pain;
Contractions gripping,
And cattle lowing:

Messy.

There was no bed.
No midwives yet –
Just a husband’s hand.
And the promise of an angel:

‘Be not afraid.’

Born not in fear,
But in love;
Love itself was born
The angel exclaimed:

Today, God is with us.
