A poem by Jim Deeds
[New City Magazine – July 2023, page 23]
Just as my body withers and dies
When starved of oxygen
So too my soul would do
Without you
My lungs ache for air
My soul for consolation
My eyes for just
A glimpse of you
Each breath inhaled deeply
Slowly
Taking in
The wonder of you
The older I become
These breaths, more precious
Blooming, becoming
I watch the glory of you
And as I draw my last
Breath and sight
I will breathe in thanksgiving
For having known you

- Soul Seasons is the follow up to Jim’s book of poems, Gym for the Soul, and was written over the space of two years of observing the seasons as they came and went, both in the world around him and in his own life and the lives of those he loves.
