Oxygen

A poem by Jim Deeds

[New City Magazine – July 2023, page 23]

Just as my body withers and dies
When starved of oxygen
So too my soul would do
Without you

My lungs ache for air
My soul for consolation
My eyes for just
A glimpse of you

Each breath inhaled deeply
Slowly
Taking in
The wonder of you

The older I become
These breaths, more precious
Blooming, becoming
I watch the glory of you

And as I draw my last
Breath and sight
I will breathe in thanksgiving
For having known you
